ZF presents all-in-one solution for commercial vehicle PTOs

0

One hundred percent electrification, one hundred percent efficiency: the eWorX product family enables commercial vehicle Power Take-Offs (PTOs) that are locally emission-free. Both vehicle and special body manufacturers can benefit. With this complete solution, technology company ZF supports the commercial vehicle sector through its transformation to a more sustainable future.

When it comes to the electrification of commercial vehicles, the focus will not be solely on the powertrain. In this segment, around fifty percent of vehicles are additionally equipped for use as municipal vehicles, on construction sites, in depots, etc. Currently, specialised vehicles, such as truck cranes, dump trucks or cement mixers require suitably designed PTOs that are coupled to the engine or transmission of the combustion engine drivetrain. However, because the architecture of conventional drivelines differs fundamentally from electric drivelines, familiar interfaces are no longer used, future PTOs need to be redesigned. “This is where ZF, with its expertise as a systems supplier, can really support the industry towards its way to electrification,” explains Kleber Vinhas, who has responsibility for the CV Powertrain Modules product line in ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Technology Division. “With eWorX, we have simplified the integration of equipment into new platforms and are providing the market with a new standard interface for the operation of work bodies. This is a smart solution that takes us one step closer to zero emissions. With this solution, we support vehicle and body manufacturers in optimally mastering the complex challenge of electrification.

All-in-one, simple integration

The newly developed product family offers an innovative all-in-one solution to efficiently electrify PTOs for operating work equipment – regardless of the architecture used for the drive. The advantages are locally emission-free operation with significantly reduced noise, facilitating their use in cities and residential areas in particular.

The core of the system is the ZF eCubE which provides the link between the vehicle battery and the modular electric ZF ePTO which in turn drives the equipment. The eCubE contains suitable power electronics, a control unit and software packages tailored to the particular application. Seamless connection to the vehicle CAN bus integrates eWorX solutions to the vehicle’s battery and energy management systems. New safety and assistance functions are also possible – as is the option to control the machines via smartphone or tablet from outside of the cab.

Test vehicle with customer interest from the start

ZF has built an experimental electrified, remote-controllable dump truck which can also operate independently of the tractor. The prototype is currently undergoing an intensive test phase in real world conditions at ZF’s Schweinfurt location. In cooperation with various body manufacturers, further vehicles featuring solutions for electric auxiliary drives are already under construction. Extensive real-world testing of these prototypes will also be carried out by the manufacturers involved.

The first customers have already signaledtheir interest in eWorX.

Thermo King, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies, today announced that Turners (Soham) Ltd, one of the largest privately owned transport companies in the United Kingdom (U.K.) upgraded its fleet with 71 new temperature controlled trailers featuring Advancer A-400 units. Turners expects the fuel efficiency of the Advancer to help them mitigate the impact of the rising fuel costs on their operations.

Established over 80 years ago, Turners (Soham) Ltd operates in excess of 1850 vehicles from 32 sites and employing over 3400 people. Currently, Turners (Soham) Ltd operates approx. 700 refrigerated trailers, with over 500 of the trailers being based on Thermo King refrigeration systems.

The increase in fuel price as a result of the rebate on red diesel being withdrawn will have a major impact on our overall fleet running costs,” said Tim King, group fleet engineer at Turners (Soham). “However, we believe that the introduction of new modern trailers into our fleet, all of which will benefit from Advancer’s proven fuel saving performance, will continue our push to operate the most economic temperature-controlled trailer fleet as possible.

Thermo King A-Series units are up to 30% more fuel-efficient than the market average and are the first in the industry to give complete transparency of fuel levels and fuel consumption. Customers can easily access the fuel consumption data of the unit – recorded, displayed, and made available remotely via telematics.

When designing Advancer, we asked our customers to tell us what they needed to work better, to win more business, and to cut their cost of operation. They named the cost of fuel as one of the most challenging elements of running a transport fleet,” said Steve Williams, area sales and service manager at Thermo King. “Advancer redefines the fuel efficiency of trailer refrigeration.

The units offer unmatched electrical and fuel efficiency and up to 40% quicker pull down than the market average. We believe that Turners will not only improve the efficiency of its fleet but also benefit from increased residual values of their trailers, with better advanced temperature management and inbuilt connectivity.

The new Advancer trailer systems supplied, installed, and maintained by one of Thermo King’s dealers in the UK, Marshall Fleet Solutions (MFS).

We are a long-term major fleet user of Thermo King refrigeration systems. As soon as Advancer was launched, we wanted to introduce this innovative trailer fridge system into our fleet as soon as it was available,” said Tim King. “With the inbuilt telematics in the new Advancers, MFS and ourselves will be able to monitor closely the up-to-date fuel usage to identify the progress that we are making with regards to generating even greater fuel savings within the fleet.
